Did, then, a thing, which in itself was good, involve death in my case? Heaven forbid! It was sin that involved death; so that, by its use of what I regarded as good to bring about my death, its true nature might appear; and in this way the Commandment showed how intensely sinful sin is.

Então o que é bom se tornou para mim morte? De maneira nenhuma! Mas foi o pecado, para que se mostrasse como pecado, que operou a morte em mim por meio do bem, a fim de que, por meio do mandamento, o pecado se tornasse excessivamente pecaminoso.

Portanto, o que era bom tornou-se morte para mim? De modo algum. Mas o pecado, para que se mostrasse como pecado por meio do que é bom, produziu em mim a morte. Isso, para que através do mandamento o pecado se revelasse pecaminoso, além da medida.
