Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?

So the report spread among his followers that that disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say that he was not to die, but said “If it is my will that he should wait until I come, what has that to do with you?”

Es ging nun dieses Wort unter die Brüder aus: Jener Jünger stirbt nicht. Und Jesus sprach nicht zu ihm, daß er nicht sterbe, sondern: Wenn ich will, daß er bleibe, bis ich komme, was geht es dich an?

Salió entonces este dicho entre los hermanos, que aquel discípulo no había de morir. Mas Jesús no le dijo, No morirá; sino: Si quiero que él quede hasta que yo venga ¿qué á ti?

Saiu, pois, esta conversa entre os irmãos, que aquele discípulo não morreria. Contudo Jesus não lhe disse que não morreria, mas sim: Se eu quero que ele fique até que eu venha, que te importa?

Então, espalhou-se esta notícia entre os irmãos, de que aquele discípulo não morreria. Todavia, Jesus não disse a Pedro que o outro discípulo não morreria, mas afirmou: "Se Eu quiser que ele permaneça até Eu voltar, que te importa?".
