Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the power which the Lord hath given me to edification, and not to destruction.

For this cause I write these things while absent, that I may not when present deal sharply, according to the authority which the Lord gave me for building up, and not for casting down.

This is my reason for writing as I am now doing, while I am away from you, so that, when I am with you, I may not act harshly in the exercise of the authority which the Lord gave me — and gave me for building up and not for pulling down.

Deswegen schreibe ich dieses abwesend, auf daß ich anwesend nicht Strenge gebrauchen müsse, nach der Gewalt, die der Herr mir gegeben hat zur Auferbauung und nicht zur Zerstörung.

Por tanto os escribo esto ausente, por no tratar presente con dureza, conforme á la potestad que el Señor me ha dado para edificación, y no para destrucción.

Por isso eu escrevo estas coisas ausente; para que, quando estiver presente não use de rigor, segundo o poder que o Senhor tem me dado, para edificação, e não para destruição.

Escrevo essas coisas enquanto estou distante de vós, para que, quando eu estiver convosco, não precise vos tratar com rigor no uso da minha autoridade, a qual o Senhor me deu, para que eu possa vos edificar, e não vos destruir.
